About Lauren Gabler

2015 President

Let’s cheer on Julia and Robert at the RnR DC Marathon and Half!

rnr-dc-logo-15This Saturday, March 14, is the Rock n’ Roll Marathon and Half here in DC. We have two superstar runners competing in the races – Julia Taylor in the marathon and Robert Kirk in the half. Both have been training hard through the treacherous winter and are ready to wow the crowds tomorrow morning!

Any other WRC-er’s running that I missed?

Cheer Station
Let’s show Julia and Robert some WRC love tomorrow morning. Join our cheer station on Rock Creek Parkway between miles 5 and 6, around the Mass Avenue (Glover) Bridge and the Waterside Drive entrance. Many thanks to Julia Blakely for leading our cheer station which is perfectly placed just before the grueling Calvert hill!

If you can’t make it to this cheering section, but still want to support the runners, here’s a course map.

SDR for March 8, 2015 + Daylight Savings Reminder!

Somehow it’s March and it’s still snowing, but the WRC Sunday Distance Run is ON for Sunday, March 8. We’re expecting about 8 inches of snow, followed by a chilly Friday that won’t encourage too much melting of the snow and ice. Saturday and Sunday look like they’ll be a bit warmer – mid 40’s – so we’ll have to gauge the trail conditions over the next few days.

With that being said, our group will still be meeting at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 8 in front of the CB2 store on M Street in Georgetown (click here for directions). We’ll have folks running anywhere from 8 miles to 20 miles at a variety of paces. Everyone is welcome.

Don’t forget!
Daylight savings starts on Saturday night, meaning that we’ll lose an hour of sleep leading up to our long runs. Fear not: we’re still meeting for coffee post-run so we can guarantee caffeine will help you make it through the day!

First Sunday Photo: March 2015

Many thanks to our Race Coordinator, Julia Taylor, for leading our Sunday Distance Run last week. Numbers were low due to treacherous conditions, but our passion was high — especially for those training for Spring races!

Here’s our monthly first Sunday photo courtesy of Julia:

Nice work, guys!

SDR for March 1, 2015

Believe or not, March is just a few days away although winter is still very much with us. However, we have good news to share for our Sunday Distance Run scheduled for March 1, 2015:

1. Many trails are clear of snow and ice so we’ll be able to return to our favorite routes.
2. Race Team Coordinator Julia Taylor is leading the run. She has some great routes planned for the group!

As always, we’ll be meeting at 8:00 a.m. in front of the CB2 store in Georgetown. Hope to see you out there!

P.S. Don’t forget – we’re fielding teams for spring races! Click here for more information.

SDR UPDATE: Run on Saturday, 2/14 NOT Sunday, 2/15

Hello All –

Due to extreme cold on Sunday, and concern for everyone’s safety, we’re moving the Sunday Distance Run scheduled for Sunday, February 15 to Saturday, February 14. We’ll still meet in front of CB2 at 8:00 a.m.

This is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with all of the runners you love 🙂

Running routes will be determined tomorrow (Saturday) morning as this may affect training plans, long runs, etc.

If you have any questions, send an email to lauren@washrun.org.

Thanks!
Lauren

2015 President’s message to WRC members

Greetings, my fellow WRC-ers,

I’m pleased to be writing to you as the Washington Running Club’s newest president and excited to join the WRC board for another year of running and socializing with our great club! I’d also like to thank Kirk Masterson for his two years of service to WRC as president – they are certainly big shoes to fill.

On Saturday, January 17, WRC held it’s annual meeting and party which lended itself to productive club discussions as well as lighthearted conversation catching up with friends both new and old. Many thanks to our VP, Carla Freyvogel, for hosting the party in her beautiful home and for serving wonderful meals and drinks – perhaps we should double as a cooking club?

Club Goals for 2015
Without further ado, let’s lay out some of our goals for the next year based on feedback from club members.

  • Increase participation on the WRC board: the WRC board is the heartbeat of the club. While we have several positions already filled – including President, Vice President, Chief Information Officer, Treasurer, Social and Outreach Coordinator, and Race Manager – we need more support for other important positions, such as Secretary and Run Coordinator, to name a few. Click here to learn more about the positions and send an email to me at lauren@washrun.org if you’re interested in joining the board!
  • Grow the Sunday Distance Run pace groups: WRC is growing and that’s great news for our Sunday Distance Runs. A greater number of runners means greater opportunity to have a running partner and improve your running overall. We plan to do this by continuing to embrace the greater DC running community and welcoming runners of all levels.
  • Socialize more!: running forms great bonds, but there’s something special about seeing your best running friends out of uniform (in non-running clothes) for the first time! This year, we’ll have more happy hours, outings, and special runs, volunteer opportunities, and it will be posted on our club calendar so you can plan for our events.

How can I help?

Join the board or organize an event: there’s a lot you can do to give back to the club! Whether it’s joining the board or organizing a happy hour, you can dedicate as much or as little time as you want – everything helps.  Reach out to lauren@washrun.org with your ideas.

Represent WRC at a race: signed up for any races? Join the WRC racing team! Send an email to our Race Coordinator, Julia Taylor, at jtrunningdc@gmail.com to learn more.

On behalf of the WRC Board, thank you so much for your membership, camaraderie, and commitment to running. We have a lot to look forward to in the coming year and I am thrilled to be sharing it with you!

See you on Sunday,
Lauren
