2. TRACK WORKOUT – CANCELLED TONIGHT Wednesday (3/07)

The track workout is cancelled tonight because of scheduled lacrosse games at Washington-Lee High School, and also because of the snow that the region is expected to get. You’re on your own folks.

As far as we know, the track will be available 3/14 and 3/21, but not 3/28. Those training for marathons, or who simply LOVE the track, may want to try to reschedule workouts on a morning, or do another type of workout, such as fartlek.

Stayed tuned for future workout information….if we switch back to Tuesday’s sooner rather than later, the track may be open.

Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize that it was your money to start with.

3. SUNDAY DISTANCE RUN (3/11) – The Sunday long run group meets at the 3300 block of M Street in Georgetown at 8:00 a.m. (1.5 blocks down from the Key Bridge). Parking is plentiful on M Street. See the website (washrun.org) for directions to the run if you need them.

After the run, we regroup at Dean & Deluca on M Street to recover with hot and cold drinks, crumpets, and chatter. Make sure you have dry clothes to change into as it is very chilly in the coffee area when it’s cold outside.

[We had a good turnout of about 15 people last week and several members training for Boston went 20 miles! Kudos to Jess, Lucy, Will, Tom, and Dan for trying to beat the Capital Crescent Trail to a pulp.]

Remember to SPRING your clocks forward this Saturday eve (3/10), daylight savings time is early this year! So on Sunday 8 a.m. will really be 7 a.m., but yet the new 8 a.m.

“Touch your customer, and you’re halfway there.” –Estee Lauder

4. MEMBER AND MISC STUFF

A.  ST. PATRICK’S DAY 8K VOLUNTEERING! (Message from the Prez)

The WRC partners with the Capital Running Company by providing volunteers for this race’s packet pick-up and registration. It’s a great way for club members to contribute to the running community, as well as make a few dollars for the club (we are compensated for the help the club provides). It’s almost always a fun way to spend a few hours!

If you have the time and inclination, please volunteer by showing up at the Old Post Office Pavillion at 12th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW (upper balcony). The shifts are as follows: Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. And on Sunday (raceday), March 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. (at the tent in front of the building). Thanks! Let us know if you plan to be there by emailing our president: adinawadsworth@gmail.com

B. Law firm healthfare: From Alisha Ramirez: I’m currently setting up a health fair in our Washington DC , office.  We would love it if a member of your organization could participate. We would like for your organization to disseminate information about the running club and all the events you participate in. Our Washington office has 57 employees. The fair will be Thursday, March 29th from 9 – 1 pm.

If any member has the time available and is interested in promoting the WRC (or running, in general), please let us know (wrc03dc@yahoo.com) so that we can put you in touch with Ms. Ramirez.

C. BOSTON MARATHON WRC TEAM. Calling all members who are running the Boston Marathon! Do you want to be on a WRC team? They only have men’s and women’s teams, no mixed, and a minimum of 3 team members. Team registration begins tomorrow and goes through April 5th. If interested, email the club: wrc03dc@yahoo.com so we can see what we can put together. Thanks! Team comp just adds a little more fun to the event. (You have to be already registered and accepted into the marathon to join a team.)

D. SCOPE IT OUT 5K. The third annual Scope it Out 5k Run for Colon Cancer Awareness, a not-for-profit fundraising/awareness race, will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2007, in West Potomac Park, Washington, D.C., during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

www.scopeitout5k.com

(This race is held in honor of Charles Kraenzle, a past co-worker of members Bruce Reynolds and Jim Wadsworth, who died of colon cancer).

E. NEW WRC FAQ Page!  To help prospective runners get a better feel for the WRC without having to read every page of our extensive website, we have a new Frequently Asked Questions page. The questions and answers offered largely result from the types of questions we are often asked. Believe us, we get a lot more questions than you would think on a regular basis. Check out the page at: http://www.washrun.org/about-us/frequently-asked-questions/

If you have friends who might be intested in the WRC, send them to the FAQ page!

F. NATIONAL MARATHON. The WRC is a running club partner of the National Marathon (and a half marathon also), to be run on March 24, 2007 beginning at 7 a.m. The entire course is in the District of Columbia. Race participants can look forward to a mix of our country’s most famous landmarks, monuments and memorials blended with some of DC’s emerging and eclectic neighborhoods. The course will start and finish at historic RFK Stadium in downtown Washington, DC and is certified as a Boston qualifier.

Check it out at:

G. Dues. Just a friendly reminder that dues for 2007 are due, if you haven’t already paid. If you recently joined the club (after Sept 1st), you are paid up through 2007 already. If you have questions regarding your membership status, email wrc03dc@yahoo.com

We meet on Wednesday evening at the Washington-Lee High School track. The speed workout begins at 6:30pm. Show up earlier to warm up a couple of miles if you can. See the website for directions.

Parking is a bit difficult because the school is being renovated and the parking lot is closed. Park on the streets nearby, but be respectful of those that live in the neighborhood please. Of course, the school is metro accessable (Ballston metro stop).

NOTE. Given that there are other clubs and runners using the track Wednesday evenings and it tends to get crowded, the WRC meets at the bleachers on the side OPPOSITE of where the bathrooms are located.

This week’s (3/14) suggested workouts:
For spring marathoners: 2 x 2mile, 400m rest (do these at or slightly faster than marathon pace)
8 to 12 x 800m, 400m rest

Track workouts, like all WRC activities, are voluntary. If you choose to come out, be sure to properly hydrate and bring water or a sports drink. Also, bring proper attire given the weather conditions and listen carefully to your body while doing the workout. Track workouts make you FASTER…come on out!

Actual sick note from a mother to a school: “Maryann was absent December 11-16, because she had a fever, sore throat, headache, and upset stomach. Her sister was also sick, fever, and sore throat, her brother had a low grade fever and ached all over. I wasn’t the best either, sore throat and fever. There must be something going around, her father even got hot last night.”
