2. TRACK WORKOUT – (Wednesday 4/04)  We will be switching to Tuesday nights for track beginning on April 10th…next week!

We meet on Wednesday evening at the Washington-Lee High School track. The speed workout begins at 6:30pm. Show up earlier to warm up a couple of miles if you can. See the website for directions.

Parking is a bit difficult because the school is being renovated and the parking lot is closed. Park on the streets nearby, but be respectful of those that live in the neighborhood please. Of course, the school is metro accessable (Ballston metro stop).

NOTE. Given that there are other clubs and runners using the track Wednesday evenings and it tends to get crowded, the WRC meets at the bleachers on the side OPPOSITE of where the bathrooms are located.

This week’s (4/04) suggested workouts:
Boston Marathon runners: 4 to 6 x 800m w/400m recovery
Others: 5 x 1200m w/400m recovery
Erica reports that she believes the kids are on spring break and the schedule is free and clear.

But if for some reason, the track is closed, we meet on Stafford street for a trail run.
VP & Track Coordinator: Erica mortonej@yahoo.com

Weather Forecast:
Today: Showers likely along with a possible rumble of thunder this morning, then partly cloudy during the afternoon hours. High 67F. ESE winds shifting to WSW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 60%. Rainfall around a quarter of an inch. Tonight: Mainly clear skies. Low 41F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph.
(Hopefully, the rain will be done by track time).

Track workouts, like all WRC activities, are voluntary. If you choose to come out, be sure to properly hydrate and bring water or a sports drink. Also, bring proper attire given the weather conditions and listen carefully to your body while doing the workout. Track workouts make you FASTER…come on out!

“When you step into a turnaround situation, you can safely assume four things: morale is low, fear is high, the good people are halfway out the door, and the slackers are hiding.”  –Nina Disesa (chairwoman of McCann-Erickson Worldwide)

3. SUNDAY DISTANCE RUN (4/08)  The Sunday long run group meets at the 3300 block of M Street in Georgetown at 8:00 a.m. (1.5 blocks down from the Key Bridge). Parking is plentiful on M Street. See the website (washrun.org) for directions to the run if you need them.

After the run, we regroup at Dean & Deluca on M Street to recover with hot and cold drinks, crumpets, and chatter. Make sure you have dry clothes to change into as it can be quite chilly in the coffee area.

2. TRACK WORKOUT – (Tuesday 4/17)  TRACK IS CLOSED TONIGHT DUE TO A GIRLS LACROSSE GAME. Turnout likely to be light anyway given that many of our track regulars just ran the Boston Marathon yesterday. If you still want to show up, hit the trail and do fartlek. The track appears to be open for the next few weeks though, so we’ll be able to get back to normal starting next week. Hopefully, the weather will come around to cooperate too. We want Sun!

Fartlek workout (can be done anywhere): 15 x 40 seconds hard, 20 seconds easy (this is a great workout for reintroducing some speed into your legs and it goes by fast too).

3. SUNDAY DISTANCE RUN (4/22)  The Sunday long run group meets at the 3300 block of M Street in Georgetown at 8:00 a.m.

Our Sunday stalwart, Sir Gerry Ives, reported that turnout was very low last Sunday. This was due to many of our distance regular members running the Boston Marathon and some others were away. Attendance will be picking up as we head into late Spring and the Summer months.

5. MISCELLANEOUS – MARATHON MEN. Recently there was an interesting article (Wall Street Journal, April 13, 2007, by Allen St. John) on Kenyan marathon men and how they may be the greatest dynasty in sports. Kenyan men had won 14 of the past 16 Boston Marathons (after yesterday, it’s 15 of the past 17). Kenyan men have also won 5 of the past 6 Chicago Marathons, 6 of the past 9 New York Marathons, 8 of the past 10 Berlin Marathons, and the last 3 London Marathons. But it isn’t just these wins that makes them a dynasty according to the article because it isn’t just a few Kenyans winning these races.

In 2006, there were 111 marathon times of 2:11 or under and 62 of those (56%) were run by Kenyans. Indeed, in a small country of 34 million people (2006 est), roughly the population of California, 58 different Kenyan men ran sub 2:11 marathons in 2006. By contrast, the U.S. had 299 million people in 2006 and 3 men ran sub 2:11 marathons. Ethiopia’s Haile Gebreselassie ran the fastest time last year, but there were only 9 sub 2:11 times by Ethiopians (a country with more than twice the population of Kenya).

According to the article the secret to this so-called dynasty lies in its strength in elite runner numbers (experts point to everything from high altitude training and the nation’s running culture for all these elites). Kenya has a girth of elite athletes that train together and who race against eachother, while top runners in other countries mostly train by racing against the clock. Whatever the reason, the statistics proffered in the article show that Kenyan men are the cream of the crop in men’s marathon racing.

(It was at least nice to see an american man taking 8th in yesterday’s Boston Marathon, and Deena Drossin was 5th in the women’s race.)

4. MEMBER AND MISC STUFF
A. DUES. Many have paid their dues for 2007 and the club greatly thanks them! However, some remain tardy. A special email notice went out to tardy members yesterday which we hope they will heed. We want to keep them! Dues are a low bargain-rate $15 per year (individual) and $25 per year (family). If you have questions regarding your membership status, email wrc03dc@yahoo.com

Here is the link for paying online:

Please renew if you are tardy, we want to keep you in the club and on the email listing (to be adjusted in early May)! Thank you.

B. WRC RUNNING SHIRTS: We are now selling Brooks short-sleeved (wicking) running shirts that are red and have the WRC logo in navy blue printed on the left chest area. We are selling these for $20 each, a bargain because they usually sell for $30. We have a limited number in stock so get them while they last.

The shirts are Brooks Equilibrium made of Podium SS mesh. This fabric rapidly moves moisture away from the body and speeds evaporation for a dry, comfortable run. A few have already tried them out…they rock!

If you want one sent to you (if you don’t make it out to the Sunday run or track often), send a check for $22 ($2 to cover shipping) to Jim Wadsworth, 301 11th St, NE, Washington, DC 20002. Remember to give your size and address.

C. WRC RACE TEAM OPPORTUNITIES.
The club will be putting race teams together for the Sallie Mae 10k (May 6) and the Capitol Hill Classic 10k (May 20). If you will be registering for these races and would like to be included on the team, please contact Adina at adinawadsworth@gmail.com. Info as follows:

Sallie Mae: at least 4 people on a team and possible categories are men, women, or mixed. We will likely have a mixed team if there is enough interest.

Frederick Marathon Best Wishes. The Frederick Marathon is being held this Sunday and Iron Mike Wardian will be trying to set a Guiness World Record for “fastest marathon while pushing a baby in a stroller.” The current world record is 2 hours 49 minutes. Mike will be pushing his 9-month old son Pierce Miler Wardian. If Mike does this, it’ll be his second marathon world record. He held the treadmill marathon world record for two years.

Dane Rauschenberg will be running Frederick also, and will be starting in last place. He will then work to pass as many runners as possible, enabling him to raise money for L’Arche Mobile, his designated beneficiary for last year’s fiddy2 quest.

Best of luck to both Mike and Dane in meeting their respective goals!

“It’s better to waste money, than it is to waste time. You can always get more money.” –Hal Sparks (actor and comedian)

2. TRACK WORKOUT – (Tuesday 5/01)  TRACK IS CLOSED TONIGHT DUE TO LACROSSE GAMES. Man, oh man, lots of events…hopefully, we’ll get back on the track circuit soon.

A few stalwarts will be meeting on Stafford Street to run the bike trail and do some fartlek after a 2 mile warmup.
Dan, Doug, Will, Tom, etc. will be doing the following fartlek: 5 x 5 minutes (at 10k pace) with a 3 minute recovery.
Another suggested fartlek workout (can be done anywhere): 8 x 3 minutes hard with a 2 minute recovery

3. SUNDAY DISTANCE RUN (5/06)  The Sunday long run group meets at the 3300 block of M Street in Georgetown at 8:00 a.m. (1.5 blocks down from the Key Bridge). Parking is plentiful on M Street. See the website (washrun.org) for directions to the run if you need them.

After the run, we regroup at Dean & Deluca on M Street to recover with hot and cold drinks, crumpets, and chatter.

[We had a great turnout this past Sunday and the weather was superb!]

“I’ve always heard about running on the C&O Canal and now I’ve done it. It was really enjoyable.” –John Barber (good friend of long time member Johnny O’s visiting from Massachusetts)

4. MEMBER AND MISC STUFF
A. DUES. Many have paid their dues for 2007 and the club greatly thanks them! However, some remain tardy. A special email notice went out to tardy members recently which we hope people will heed. Dues are a low bargain-rate $15 per year (individual) and $25 per year (family). If you have questions regarding your membership status, email wrc03dc@yahoo.com

Here is the link for paying online:

Please renew if you are tardy, we want to keep you in the club and on the email listing (removals will begin next week). Thank you.

B. WRC RUNNING SHIRTS FOR SALE: We are now selling Brooks short-sleeved (wicking) running shirts that are red and have the WRC logo in navy blue printed on the left chest area. We are selling these for $20 each, a great bargain because they retail for $30.

Capitol Hill Classic: at least 5 runners on a team and only a coed category. We will have one team.
