First Sunday’s Photo

Off to a good looking earlier start for the summer!

Off to a good looking earlier start for the summer!

The good Doctor Tris, not pictured, wires in his absence slip:

I’ll be at a lake accessible by float plane, on a remote lake, in Alaska. I’ll be trail running, as there are no roads. We’ll start at the old time.
Vb,t.

Esquire Daniel Yi, also not pictured, was caught finishing in Pietermaritzburg, RSA, as the top American at the Comrades Marathon. According to Gerry Ives, Dan ran 6:48:18, 79th overall, 76th male, 51st in his age group. That story is developing.

Rachel Clattenburg, likely recovering from her win at The North Face Endurance Challenge 50K on Saturday, is not among those pictured above. Rachel’s time of 5:05:05 gave her the win under incredibly hot conditions; Laura Jennings braved the heat as well to finish as the 68th female. More details to follow. Continue reading

Where Does Your Thunder Roll on Sundays?

Some of our favorite Sunday running routes, dressed up in blue.

Some of our favorite Sunday running routes, dressed up in blue.

A question that people new to WRC often ask, even after reading the FAQs, is “Where do you do these 8 to 20 mile runs together, anyway? What does it all mean‽

And the answer is always “… it kind of depends,” because we have a lot of different paces on offer, and a lot of different favorite running routes in store! And like hurricanes, Winter Storms, Magicicada broods, or fancy mixed drinks, these quality routes have names! Allow me to introduce you to two of them, and a map of all of them. Continue reading

From Washington, with Love

Wednesday Interval Workouts

Looking to add some spring to your step? The Crawlers, another DC running club, has extended an open invitation to its weekly Wednesday interval workouts. The group usually meets at 6:30 AM at Banneker track, but they sometimes meet in Woodley Park for hill repeats and they occasionally do an evening track workout. It’s a fun group of people with a nice range of speeds. They don’t have a website, so if you want to learn about upcoming workouts and where they’ll be meeting, send an email to: <Ben (dot) Geman (at) thehill (dot) com> and he’ll add you to the email list.

Metric Marathon SDR

Google responded that 26.2 km is roughly 16.2799 miles. For those interested in covering this distance during this Sunday’s Distance Run (SDR), I propose Rock Creek Trail with a modified version of the Western Ridge-Valley Trail Loop. The modification to the posted route will be turning onto Wise Road (from Western Ridge Trail to Valley Trail) rather than continuing up to Beach Drive. Assuming a fully charged battery, we will have a better map for this run after Sunday.

Yes, all 30 foot high geysers will be avoided!

See you Sunday!

What do you get when two runners converse during a 10.5 mile run?

Answer: Planning for a 21 mile run!

After much deliberation, Rachel and I have decided to conquer the Rock Creek—Capital Crescent loop (approximately 21 miles) during the regular Sunday Long Run this Sunday, Feb 24th. The loop goes through Rock Creek park, Georgetown Branch Trail, and Capital Crescent Trail (back to Georgetown). We would love to have fellow WRC’ers join in with us!

See you on Sunday!

Track Workouts Update

Sorry for the lack of posts this summer about the track workouts.  The groups are still meeting at the following locations:

American University track – Tuesday mornings at 6:30am

Banneker Track – Wednesday mornings at 6:45 (This location will change to Cardozo High School soon.  We will post when this occurs.)

Please note that we will no longer be posting recommended workouts.  Please use the workouts below for ideas for creating your own.  Collaboration with others in your respective group is also encouraged!
