Sunday Distance Run – 8/31

The forecast for this Sunday morning wouldn’t be that bad if you were planning to go out for a nice stroll through the park.  Unfortunately, most of us are looking to run somewhere between 10 to 20 miles!  The planned route for this Sunday will include the Hains Point loop.  It is around 3-4 mile jog over to Hains Point (HP) from the SDR starting location, the loop is around 3 miles, and it is around 3-4 mile jog back to SDR start.  If you are only running 1 loop around HP, then the mileage is around 10.5.  Some will be running multiple loops with a portion of these miles at marathon pace/effort (for total mileage between 17 to 20).

You can drop off a water bottle at the start of the loop to have every ~3 miles.  Some of the water fountains along the route work and some don’t, so bringing your own fluid is definitely recommended!

The regular SDR start remains 0700.  There will be a pack running in the range of 17 to 20 miles that will be starting at 0630 to beat the heat.  Please email drew@washrun.org for coordination if you are planning to start at 0630.  For both start times, the start location is in front of CB2 in Georgetown (33rd and M street)!

Sunday Distance Run – 8/17

This morning would have been near perfect weather for a long run. If only it were Sunday already! It still looks pretty decent for Sunday morning, so how about a nice 20-mile run?

The planned route will go over the Key Bridge, up the Custis Trail to N. Harrison St, continue through Arlington to Military Rd, and over Chain Bridge to the Towpath.  At this point, the pack will likely split between those running roughly 13 miles and those running something closer to 20 miles. If you want to keep it to roughly 13 miles, then turn right on Towpath to head back to Georgetown. For the full 20-mile loop, turn left on Towpath to head towards Glen Echo. We will cross over the canal at around mile 13.5, and head back down MacArthur. The planned route map can be viewed here.

There are water fountains on Custis at around mile 3 and N. Harrison St at around mile 6. There is a water fountain and restroom at around mile 14 in Glen Echo.  There is also, of course, water fountain and restroom at Fletcher’s which is roughly 2.5mi from the finish.

Sunday, 0700, in front of CB2 in Georgetown (33rd and M St, NW)!

Sunday Distance Run – 8/10

The planned route(s) for this Sunday will involve running out on the Capital Crescent Trail (CCT). One crew (led by Julia) will be doing the full 20+ mi CCT – Rock Creek loop. Most of the pack will be in for a wonderful out-and-back on CCT (featuring a steady decline on the way back). The turnaround point will be at around the 8mi mark. If going 9mi out, then the turnaround point will be just past Connecticut Ave. The out-and-back map (hopefully not needed) for the 8mi turnaround can be viewed here.

The water fountains do work at Fletchers, but have not been working at the fountain near DC/MD line. Rumor has it that the water fountain on CCT in Bethesda is actually working.

Starting at 0700 in front of CB2 in Georgetown!

Sunday Distance Run – 7/27

We will have two planned routes for tomorrow.  One for a pack of procrastinators and one for the overachievers.

First, the procrastinators… A lovely 15 mile (rounded down and definitely not USATF-certified) loop out on the Custis Trail, down the Bluemont Trail, over on the W&OD trail, Arlington neighborhood streets to Military Road, over Chain Bridge, and back down the Towpath to Georgetown.  Don’t worry about memorizing the directions.  Just stay with the pack, and you’ll make it back!  The map can also be reviewed at:

Second, the overachievers… A grueling 16 mile out-and-back on the CCT with approximately 10 miles at Marathon Pace.  Julia will be leading this group, and no map required!

Good luck to those racing at the CC Twilighter tonight!

Start at 0700 in front of CB2 in Georgetown (33rd and M Street)!

Sunday Distance Run – 7/20

Anxious to get in a 20-miler during this relatively cool mornings?  Julia will be leading a group on such an endeavor tomorrow.  The route will be the Rock Creek Park – Capital Crescent Loop, done counter-clocwise.  This route goes through Rock Creek Park to East-West Highway, over on Georgetown Branch Trail, and back down the Capital Crescent Trail.

For those with more modest plans for tomorrow morning, a simple out-and-back through Rock Creek up Beach Drive will be a better plan.  Rough estimates for total mileage at turnaround points:  Peirce Mill (9mi), Military Road (13mi), Bingham (14mi), and Wise Rd (17mi).

Starting time is 0700 at 33rd and M in Georgetown (in front of CB2).

Sunday Distance Run – 7/13

The planned route for the SDR tomorrow will be the Ross Drive loop. This is around 13.5 miles total. The map for the section from Peirce Mill around Ross Drive can be found on the WRC maps page as well as an “almost correct” version from a prior posting. Other mileage options can include out-and-back for fewer than 13.5 miles or a few miles of add-on at the end before heading back to M street.  We should be able to keep the pack together through the first water stop at Peirce Mill.

Start at 33rd and M street in Georgetown (in front of CB2) at 0700!

Sunday Distance Run – 7/6

Excellent weather predicted for tomorrow morning! The planned route will be a 13 mile trip around the mall, Hains Point, 14th St Bridge, and back up to Georgetown. Thanks to Julia for mapping this out:
