WRC Giving Back: Potomac River Clean-up

WRC Cleanup 3

WRC joins other good samaritans in a Potomac River clean up on April 11, 2015.

Last Saturday, WRC runners Pat O’Keefe, Julia Blakely, Steve Blakey, and Mike Sanders joined forces with about 100 Washingtonians to clean up the Potomac River near the start of the Capitol Crescent Trail. While the clean up was difficult and the amount of trash in the river and surrounding land was eye-opening, our runners felt like this made an impact on the health of the Potomac – especially since it’s a staple of many of our runs.

Pat, Julia, Steve, and Mike’s good work was rewarded with hot dogs and cold beverages, provided by the Surfrider Foundation and the Washington Canoe Club.

Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer opportunities with WRC. In the mean time, check out a few photos from the event:

WRC is well represented!

It’s a big weekend for WRC!

WRC is having a heck of a weekend! On Saturday, a group will be heading to the Washington Canoe Club for a cleanup of the canal and the surrounding areas – one of our favorite running spots! Many thanks to Patrick for organizing the event and to the volunteers who are working hard to keep our land clean.

On Sunday, several runners are competing in the Cherry Blossom 10 miler! Best of luck to everyone – looks like it’s going to be a perfect day for a race during the peak blooms!

For those of us not racing, we’ll meet at 8:00 a.m. in front of the CB2 store on M Street in Georgetown. As usual, we’ll have runs spanning from 8 – 20 miles (although it might be a little less now that many folks are tapering for spring races) at a variety of paces. Everyone is welcome to join!

See you out there!

SDR for Sunday, April 5 and volunteer reminder

Our Sunday Distance Run is ON this Sunday, April 5. The run will start at 8:00 a.m. in front of the CB2 store in Georgetown. We’ll meet for coffee after (either at Dean and Deluca or Malmasion) and will finish up in time for you to spend the day with your loved ones for the Easter holiday.

Our runs will range anywhere from 8-20 miles at a variety of paces. We hope to see you out there!

Reminder!

2015 Boston Marathon Teams

Here’s a message from our Race Team Coordinator, Julia Taylor:

Spring is here and for many of us, our next big race is the Boston Marathon!

If you are a current team member running the Boston Marathon and are available to join a WRC team, please email me at jtrunningdc@gmail.com!

Currently, we have two racers for both the women’s open and women’s masters teams.  The deadline to register team members is March 30th.

I am also planning to organize either a shake-out run the day before or a social gathering after, so stay tuned…

Happy training everyone!
