Washington Running Club February 2011
WRC: We run the nation’s capital.

Long Run — SUNDAY LONG RUNS begin at 8 am, as always! Meet on the corner of 33rd and M in Georgetown, and meet for coffee at Dean and Deluca after the run.
Happy New Year, Washington Running Club!

Happy New Year from WRC President John Kendra

I hope that all of you will leverage the resource that is WRC to further your goals for the year, whether in athletic performance and development, general health & fitness, or recreation (ideally all of the above).
Big shout out and thanks to outgoing Prez Elyse Braner and her team (Amanda, James, Tamma, Dan, Brian, and Madeline) for their great service to WRC over the last couple of years. Elyse set the bar pretty high with her considerable energy and enthusiasm, attributes she is now employing at her gig with the Greater Washington Sports Alliance.

So who the heck am I?? My bio info: I have been a member of WRC for about five years now and in particular have become a fixture on the Sunday morning long-run scene. While I have never been mistaken for a “gifted athlete” I have been a lifelong fitness aficionado: running since about age 10, practicing weightlifting about that long, and, for about the last six years, a committed yoga practitioner. My wife Sylvia and I live in Falls Church City, Va.; our two sons Joseph and Gabe are currently in college (William & Mary, VCU). By occupation I am a research engineer for SAIC.

The new WRC board (see below) met on December 18 and discussed a wide range of issues. In a nutshell the goals we have for the club are very simple: 1) continuity in the club elements we all value, in particular the Sunday long runs and post-run social scene at Dean & DeLuca, the annual party (see below), and ~bi-monthly happy hours; and 2) increased emphasis on participation of WRC teams—either as runners or volunteers—at interesting races.

The benefits of the latter goal are multifold; increased team participation in races benefits the individual, strengthens bonds among club members, and raise the public profile of WRC. Two excellent upcoming opportunities (about which you will be hearing more) are:

· Carefirst Bluecross Blueshield National Half Marathon Team Relay (March 26, shares course with SunTrust National Marathon, Relay legs are 5 miles, 5 miles, and 3.1 miles)
· American Odyssey Relay (April 29-30, 12 teammates, 200 miles from Gettysburg PA to Washington DC)

Please know that this invitation to participation applies to you (yes, you) as a member of WRC. It’s your club, and the WRC board wants to hear whatever good ideas you might have (though we will also request you contribute some energy towards turning good ideas into reality :-D).

That’s all for now (what, you want more…?!). I am truly looking forward to running with you in 2011!

Wanted: Reebok Product Testers!

This from WRC member Liz Lambert:

I’ve been working as a fit tester for Reebok for a bit and they are in need of more testers (below). It’s fun. You always have the option of not participating in any trial. Generally you wear something for several weeks, rate it, fill out a questionnaire and send the garment back. Then they send it back to you to keep for free (unless you hate it in which case it seems they send you something even better …) Happy to answer any questions if it’s of any interest […snip] –Liz

Liz can be reached at lambert.liz@gmail.com. Below, the info from Reebok:

We are currently looking for fitness enthusiasts to test Reebok apparel and footwear. If you have any friends or family that wear a

Women’s size 5, 7 or 9 shoe,
Men’s size 9, 11, 12 or 13 size shoe (we only test basketball footwear in Men’s size 11 and 13) or

please have them email us at producttesting@reebok.com.
Thank you for being a valued product tester for Reebok.
