Washington Running Club 09/06/10
Run Through Fall with WRC!

A Letter From Our President

Dear WRC:

I have been doing a lot of reflecting on my running lately. Over the past 13 years of running competitively, I have come to realize that one of the most significant chunks of time in my running life has been my time with WRC.

I first joined WRC as a senior in college. I was finishing my last semester of school in a DC Washington Semester program. I immediately took to the group and made it part of my running routine. With the encouragement of WRC, I decided to train for my first marathon, something I probably would not have come to find on my own. I was an 800 m and 1500 m runner in college, and thought I would be a straight 5k runner for my entire adult running life. I remember my longs runs with members the summer of ’06 as I was preparing for Marine Corp. Each and every member of the club took me under their wing and got me through my first, and the following year, my second (and huge PR) marathon.

I have been so lucky to have had wonderful mentors in WRC that not only encouraged me to find my marathon legs, but to take on more roles in the running company, that have in turn allowed me to help others find their running legs…

After 5 years, I continue to develop friendships with WRC member, learn from WRC members, and continue to find inspiration from them. I know that I have many more years of running with the group to come!!

Recipes for Runners: Ultra-choco Smoothie

–Christine Hackman

Good for what ails you…

¾ c. low-fat chocolate ice cream or frozen yogurt
½ c. milk (cow, bean, nut, whatever…)
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Puree in blender and enjoy.

You could probably try different flavors of ice cream (vanilla? coffee?) and different liquids (cold coffee?
flat stout?), too. And maybe add some malted milk balls?
Dues help keep WRC alive! Have you renewed your membership?
Don’t forget to renew your dues! The dues pay for the club’s operating expenses, activities (e.g., WRC bbq), race teams, etc.

Race with WRC: Race Teams for the Fall

WRC is fielding race teams for four races for this fall/winter. First up is the Woodrow Wilson Half-Marathon on September 19. Currently, WRC is fielding two teams: “WRC-Lydiard” (Brian Savitch, Geoff King, and Laura Jennings) and “WRC-Pfitzinger” (David Pittman, Mathew Chesnes, and Anna Nelson). Thanks to all who are running, and good luck!

WRC is also fielding an “open mixed” race team for the Army 10 Miler – currently, our team consists of Elyse Braner, Cristina Burbach, Matthew Chesnes, Laura Jennings, Win Persina, and Adam Stolzberg. The deadline to add others to this team is this coming Friday, September 10 – please let Cris ASAP at CristinaB@washrun.org if you wish to be added to the WRC team.

Finally, WRC will also be fielding teams at the SOME 5K http://www.some.org/ on Thanksgiving morning and the Jingle All The Way 10Khttp://www.runwashington.com/jingle-all-the-way-10k.htm on December 12 (both races are held on Hains Point). If you register for these races, please a) designate “Washington Running Club” as your team, and b) let Cris know so she can confirm that you’ve been added to our team.

Many thanks to all, and good luck racing!

Former DCRRC President Roger Irwin Peet

To All,

It is with sadden news that I wish to pass this information along for distribution.

Roger Irwin Peet passed away on September 1, 2010 at his home in Fairfax, Va. He was born April 3, 1934. Roger was the beloved husband of Dottie Aukofer. Roger was president of the D.C. Road Runners Club (1985-1992). Roger like so many in the running community devoted many hours to the sport and was always willing to support. Each September he could be seen walking up and down the streets of Old Town Alexandria to visit the merchants for support of the DCRRC National Capital 20 Miler. Roger for many years served on the committee of the Northern Telecom Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run (now the Credit Union Cherry Blossom) in the early years. Roger fought the good fight and ran his race against Parkinson. Please keep the family in your prayers.

Evening of Free Running Stories to Inspire

An invitation is being extended to runners of all abilities and interest for an evening of inspiring stories which will inspire you to achieve your running fitness goals. The challenges of running may not be obvious until you lace up your shoes. What are the influences in your life that shape your running schedule and other priorities? Do you have to set a “Personal Record” in every race? Is it important to listen to your body when you run?

The evening of conversation will be held at The North Face Store, 3333 M Street, NW, Washington, DC 20007 (202-298-5510). The session will be on Wednesday September 8, 2010, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

The speakers will include:
Elyse Braner (WRC President!)
Alisa Harvey
