Ok, here it is: the race features a 6-7 mile course and 5 obstacles. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride the bike. At the 1st obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. The runner will arrive, complete the obstacle, find their bike, and begin riding. Teams will continue leapfrogging each other through the entire course. At the end of the race, racers will crawl through the infamous Mud Pit crossing the finish line together. What fun!

4. MEMBER NEWS.

A. Kyle Yost to compete in the Lake Placid Ironman this weekend…we wish Kyle all the best of endurance and luck!

B. Will and Jessica are on holiday in Paris and texting like mad. Some vacationing peeps just like to rub it in…yes, we know the Eiffel Tower is in Paris and that they have wine there too. Enjoy guys!

C. Courtney F., Will S., and Kyle Y. off to to RAGBRAI. Now, many of us can’t help but ask, what the hell is that? So, here it is — heading into its 33rd year, RAGBRAI, Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is the longest, largest and oldest touring bicycle ride in the world. RAGBRAI is sponsored by The Des Moines Register.

It is held the last week of July (the 23d through 29th this year) and the seven-day total mileage for RAGBRAI averages 472 miles while the daily mileage averages 68 miles. There is an optional century loop on one day each year for cyclists wanting the challenge.

RAGBRAI begins somewhere near Iowa’s western border and ends along the eastern border at the Mississippi River. The course changes every year.

Riders camp out during the week, stopping in small towns along the way, where they are readily accepted. At the end of each ride, the partying begins…and goes on…and on…and on….for those that choose it.

If you want to know more than this, go to: http://ragbrai.com/

Oh by the way, Lance Armstrong will be out there riding on one of the days…which brings us to….

5. LANCE MARATHON TRAINING UPDATE. Some in the club have been speculating about Lance Armstrong’s planned New York Marathon this fall. Some are saying he’ll easily go under 2:30, others are not so generous saying that he’ll be lucky to break 2:40 or 2:50, and still others have been saying that he probably won’t break 3 hours. Some want to place bets on his finishing time because they are so certain of his running prowess, or lack thereof, given his biking talent, or state of retirement.

So, here’s a tidbit we just found: A news article in the San Francisco Chronicle tells that Lance Armstrong, who is training for the November NYC Marathon, is finding marathon training more difficult than expected. The article also quotes Armstrong as saying: “It’s painful. Running is totally different from cycling — the impact on the body…. Those guys (marathon runners) train hard, watch what they eat and go to bed early — things I don’t want to do anymore. I’m over that. I like to have a bit of fun.”

So Lance is finding that running is indeed tough, even for a Tour d’ France 7 time champion…and so…as we approach the fall, may money be put where mouths wildly flap.

4. A GLANCE BACK IN TIME.  In the early 1980’s the WRC had 12 members who could go under 30 minutes for 10k and 6 members who could go under 29 minutes. All were Americans. Around the country, the running club system was very helpful in keeping good runners active. In the mid-1980’s however, the running shoe companies plucked all the good runners out of the clubs. For most, they provided only minor sponsorship. After a few years, most of that sponsorship disappeared and only a small number of runners were getting help from the shoe companies. Meanwhile, the competitive clubs had collapsed as the running shoe companies would not allow sponsored runners to run for their clubs. –Alan Roth (as told on the runwashington listserv).

This is what happened to the WRC…and indeed, the club almost withered on the vine. However, through the diligence of a few still in the club and many new members during the last 10 years, the Washington Running Club is vigorous again…and is quite possibly the greatest running club east of the Mississippi…and west of it too!
