Lindsay Goulet 23, of Arlington. A 2000 graduate of the University of Richmond, where
she captained the women’s X-C team, Lindsay has become a regular at the Wednesday evening track
workout. Within the next year, Lindsay intends to do a marathon.
Patrick Dudley, 22 of DC. Patrick, a 2001 graduate of Brown University where
he ran both X-C and track. Patrick finished 7 seconds behind Bill Dunn in the 1999
New England Collegiate Cross Country Championship. Patrick posted a number of sub 4:30 mile
indoors last winter. Raised in Northern Virginia, he is currently training for the DC marathon.
John Dugan, 31 of Arlington. Hailing from Rochester NY, and a 1993 graduate
of SUNY Binghamton John is a big middle distance guy (literally – 195 pounds). Back in
college John nailed a 1:53 800 meters, while teaming with Art Gunther (division III All
American). He tells us that his favorite running moment was "Settling an 11 year score in
the mile with Kyle Yost (of WRC) at 2001 Pennsylvania Ave mile" (John ran a 4:47,
while Kyle posted a 4:58). Kyle hopes to move into
middle distances racing this year, while remaining uninjured
We welcome all four of these runners into the WRC.

Annual Banquet a Success
WRC held its annual Banquet on January 26th, at the Rhodeside Grill in
Arlington VA. Over sixty were in attendance, and a good time was had by all. The banquet included
an award ceremony of which acknowledged athletic excellence, and service to the club.
Concluding the party was an election of officers for the coming year.
Jim Wadsworth in his capacity as president selected the honorees. Each received
a gift certificate from Borders, and a plaque graced with Phoenix Rising.
Kirk Baird won Runner of the Year for men. Perhaps the most remarkable fact about
Kirk is that he turned 41 this past year. Kirk has been an accomplished runner for the past
25 years. Jim selected Kirk over Todd Martin (it was a extemely close) on the strength
of his middle distance races thru the year.
Rockin Robin Oswald was selected woman Runner of the Year on the strength on her
Boston time (3:01) and her spring 10K races. Regrettably, as mentioned last issue, Robin
is leaving Washington in February.
We congratulate both Robin and Kirk, and thank them for setting a standard of excellence for all of us.
Here is the list of honorees
- WRC's 2001 Runner of the Year: Robin Oswald, Kirk Baird
- WRC's 2001 Most Valuable Race Team Member: Liz Parks, Todd Martin
- Exceptional WRC Volunteer Effort in 2001: Barb Fallon, Ron McGraw
- Exceptional Treasurer Duties: James Scarborough
- Exceptional Coaching of WRC Women: Nate Reilly
- Alfred Tom Felde' Trophy Award - Outstanding WRC Member: David Keating
- WRC's Outstanding Stalwart of the Sunday Distance Run: Gerry Ives
- For Long-Term Support and Dedication to WRC: Norman Brand
A bit of elaboration on the last two awards. Gerry was instrumental in starting the Sunday
run back in 1981, and has stuck with it ever since. Norm is a charter member of the WRC in 1975, and
was a member of WRC’s antecedent clubs, dating back to the 1950s.
Election of Officers
The following officers were elected for the 2002 term
- President: Jim Wadsworth
- Vice President: Barb Fallon
- Counsel: Liz Parks
- Race Team Manager: Todd Martin
- Women's Coach: Nate Reilly
- Membership Outreach: Adina Wadsworth
- Treasurer: James Scarborough
- Web: David Keating
The officers elected on Saturday are essentially the same slate of officers that governed in
2001, with the exception that Barb Fallon will be VP, as Nate devotes himself solely to
his coaching duties, and Liz Parks becomes our general counsel, replacing Jack
Coffey. The VP position is used as a grooming for the office of President. The President
sets policy, resolves disputes, makes financial decisions and is the voice of the club,
liasoning with race directors, new members & Kofi Annan .
Before we dispense with this, I (David Keating) would like to say that Jim has been/still
is an outstanding President. His presidency is the most successful since that
of Jack Coffey, back in 1984-1985. Jim has been instrumental in our
continued revitalization (with the help of his better half, Adina). Those of us born
in Connecticut take pride in his accomplishment. (Connecticut's state motto " Qui
Transtulit Sustinet"
translated: "We May be Small, but We are Still Larger than Rhode Island".)

Upcoming Nuptials
We are happy to announced that three of our members are getting married within the next
nine months. Russ Crandall will be marrying Britta Hillstrom of Chicago in the
fall. Dan Wallace and Barb Fallon became engaged in December, and will be
getting married in summer 2002. And Brian Yourish and Heidi intend to marry this summer
as well.
We congratulate all on their good fortune.
Looking for runners for GW Birthday Marathon Relay
We are still looking for runners for the GW Birthday marathon relay. This takes place
on February 17th,and consists of three legs. If you and two of your confreres wish
to form a team (men, women, co-ed & masters are the categories), contact Todd Martin or
David Keating.
Wadsworth to visit the City of Light
On Thursday, the Wadsworths will be traveling to Paris to celebrate their
February birthdays and enjoy a romantic getaway. Jim tells us "While you WRC
Sunday run folks are suffering through the miles in the early a.m., we'll be
quaffing wine in the Paris afternoon...and perhaps almost thinking of you all."
