New Members

Liz White, 25 of Alexandria. A 1997 graduate of Catholic University, Liz is currently working at the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA is also where Gerry Ives hangs his hat.) Liz posted her first marathon last October at Marine Corps, running 3:36. She is now a regular with Nate’s Wednesday evening track workout at G’town.

Tomas Valesek, 28, of Washington. A tri-athlete who trains with Jeff Aronis, Tomas has started doing our Tuesday track workouts. Tomas completed his first marathon last February in Aberdeen MD, where he posted a 3:53. Thomas immigrated to America from Slovakia eight years ago (for the sole purpose of joining our club, we assume). Thomas will be happy to know that two of his fellow members are also of Slovakian descent – Alison Lacika and Frank Sprtel.

We welcome Thomas and Liz into the club

Race Results

Defenders 10 Miler, May 6, Washington DC

The team of David Dietz, David Deschryver and Jascha Fields won the Defenders Ten Miler on May 6th. In truth, there was only one other team running against these fellows. But hey – a win is a win!
Report Captain Jascha Fields

“The day started off very nice, cloudy and cool around 7AM. At race start, the sun came out (so did the headwinds!) for the race, which made mid 60’s feel alot warmer! I am sure Jon and David ran well, I just never got a chance to ask them about their place or time. Dave Deschryver came in at around 61 minutes and Jascha Fields came in at around 64 minutes. Both of us were pleased with our performances, and we acknowledged afterwards that biking alot (and skipping track workouts) does not make you a faster runner 🙂 Nevertheless, as tri- season is fast approaching for part of the team, this was a good, hard long run!

Especially impressive is David Dietz’s time of 57 minutes. Dave has been showing up at our track workouts, and putting in some impressive performances.

  • David Dietz 57:09
  • David Deschryver 1:01:36
  • Jascaha Fields 1:04:08

Run for Mom 5K, May 13th, Reston, VA
We are happy to see that our friend Cecilia Lutz is back in the saddle. Cecilia and Steve Ward have both been swamped since the birth of their daughter Kerry last year. However, apparently she has been doing some training, because on May 13th, Cecilia took second at the Run with Mom 5k in Reston in a time 18:46.

On the men’s side of the equation, Chris Galaty won in a time of 16:19. This represents a PR for Chris. Nice job, Cecilia and Chris!

Patriots Cup 8K, May 6th, Fairfax City
Out friend Gary O’Donnell is running again. After a winter devoted to studying epidemiology at GWU and recovering from a severe ankle sprain, Gary won the 8K in a time of 27:37. Congrats Gary – glad to see you running again!

17th GOVERNOR’S BAY BRIDGE RUN, May 6th
Our friend Jennifer Kulynych ran a 43:59 to take 19th among women at this 10K run over the Chesapeake.

Party on Saturday Night

Cezar Kozin held a very nice cocktail party for us on Saturday evening at his apartment building at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue. Club members were able to nosh on terrific food, drink libations and beer – all while on a spectacular rooftop overlooking downtown DC.

We thank Cezar for his efforts putting together this party. However, Members! We only had ten folks present. Remember, these things exist for your benefit. We certainly can do better than this.

At the risk of going on a limb, Jim Wadsworth, Nate Reilly, Adina Siegel Kirk Baird, Liz Parks Frank Sprtel and James Scarborough are all puting great effort into making this club work. It is rather discouraging when the turnout is so scanty. So let’s all do what we can to support them.

News from the Medical Fromt

Jon Thoren and Todd Martin were forced to to scratch from running Defenders because of injuries, while Jim Wadsworth is still recovering. We hope these boys get better soon!
